What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable, gel-like substances containing ingredients that attract and retain water molecules under the skin. One of these ingredients is hyaluronic acid, a hydrating chemical found naturally in the body. Unlike nerve paralyzers like BOTOX® or Dysport, dermal fillers like Juvéderm® or Restylane® volumize fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the number of water molecules under the skin. Patients use dermal fillers to improve the appearance of facial wrinkles, nasolabial folds, thin lips, sunken cheeks, and under-eye circles.

One of the many great things about dermal fillers is that the naturally volumizing ingredients begin smoothing and plumping as soon as they are injected. While it may take a few days before you see visible improvement of deep nasolabial folds or marionette lines, you will quickly witness the magic of dermal fillers as wrinkles and fine lines simply vanish before your eyes.

What Are Dermal Fillers Made Of?

Hyaluronic Acid

The main ingredient in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA). Essential for lubricating joints and tissues, HA is also important for maintaining the health of the skin and eyes. In addition to smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles, HA stimulates the production of elastin and collagen, promotes the growth of new tissues, and helps keep skin moist and supple.

The U.S. FDA has approved hyaluronic acid for use in the following dermal fillers:

  • Juvederm® VOLBELLA®, VOLUMA®, VOLLURE®, and Juvederm XC®

  • Restylane®, Restylane Lyft®, Restylane Silk®, Restylane Refyne/Defyne®, and Restylane Contour®

  • Belotero Balance®

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHa)

Radiesse® is the only dermal filler approved by the FDA to contain calcium hydroxylapatite. These microscopic calcium particles create a thicker consistency compared to other dermal fillers. Radiesse® is recommended for treating deeper facial wrinkles, cheek hollows, and moderate to severe acne scars. Radiesse® also works well to rehabilitate the backs of the hands in older patients.

Poly-L-lactic Acid

Similar in composition to CaHa, poly-L-lactic acid is FDA approved for Sculptra Aesthetic® only, a dermal filler that treats deep wrinkles and nasolabial folds.

DermacareHR’s Selection of Dermal Fillers

Juvéderm®

The first injectable gel to be FDA-approved as a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, Juvéderm® has been proven to be safe and effective for all skin or color types. Juvéderm® helps your skin retain hydration, suppleness, and softness while lifting and contouring cheekbones, smoothing facial lines, smile lines, and plumping lips.

What To Expect From Juvéderm® Injections

Our highly experienced injectors gently ease Juvéderm® into your skin to immediately restore volume to your lips, plump up sunken areas of your faces, and smooth away wrinkles and folds. The process takes less than one hour, and the results are visible before you leave our office. Since there is minimal recovery or downtime, you can come to Dermacare Hampton Roads for treatment and go right back to doing what you normally do without missing work or family responsibilities.

Voluma® XC, Volbella® & Vollure®

Made by the same company (Allergan) that manufactures Juvederm and BOTOX®, Voluma® XC, Volbella® & Vollure® are also referred to as Vycross fillers. A proprietary technology developed by Allergan, Vycross involves the combination of Hyaluronic Acids of differing molecular weights which when combined, provide longer-lasting effects. Most importantly, they also have much stronger cross-linking between molecules so they last longer in the locations your injector places the filler.

These three Vycross dermal fillers have different gel thicknesses to address specific problems impacting various areas of your face. For example:

  • Voluma® is the thickest, strongest gel and ideal for deep injections into the cheek area to increase lift and boost volume. People using Voluma® can experience results lasting for up to two years.

  • Volbella® is the thinnest, most spreadable dermal filler gel and is perfect to fill lip lines or rejuvenate delicate, under-eye skin. Depending on where your Volbella® is injected, this dermal filler offers beautiful results that can last up to one year.

  • Vollure® has medium thickness and spreadability that can effectively treat nasolabial folds while allowing for natural facial expressions and movement. Results of Vollure injections can last as long as 18 months compared to Juvederm® results, which last between six and 12 months.

What To Expect With Vycross Injections

Just like Juvederm® injections, Voluma® XC, Volbella® & Vollure® injections take less than 20 to 25 minutes and provide immediate visible results. No downtime is needed. The only side effects of dermal filler or Vycross injections may be slight redness, swelling, and discomfort at injection sites. However, Vycross fillers contain an anesthetic called lidocaine that makes injections virtually pain-free.

What Is Lidocaine?

Lidocaine is a tissue anesthetic used to reduce pain and discomfort associated with dermal filler injections or other minimally invasive cosmetic procedures. The numbing effect provided by Lidocaine can be felt almost immediately after an injection is completed and lasts for about an hour.

Who Are Good Candidates for Voluma® XC, Volbella® & Vollure®?

If your skin has lost volume due to simple aging (we all start losing collagen and elastin in our early 30’s), sun exposure, smoking, or you are genetically inclined to have prematurely aging skin, you may be a good candidate for Juvederm or one of the Vycross fillers. Improve Your Self-Esteem and Skin Appearance: The Many Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Maintaining the skin’s youthful, healthy glow is easy when we’re in our 20s and early 30s. However, it’s no secret that preventing fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tones, and sagging is next to impossible once you hit 40. In addition, oil glands decrease moisture production, and the lack of collagen activity reduces skin elasticity and firmness. And then there are those dark circles under the eyes that suddenly appear overnight when you don’t get enough quality sleep.

On top of all the age-related damage your skin experiences after 40, you’ll have problems arising from all those days you spent unprotected at the beach, swimming pool, or tanning bed. Repeated and excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays will impair oil glands and directly contribute to premature wrinkling and aging of the skin.

Dermal fillers are safe, effective, and repeatable anti-aging treatments you can use to regain and retain your skin’s youthfulness. Physical benefits of dermal fillers include:

  • Reconstructing and defining facial contours for a more dramatic, fresh appearance

  • Softening and smoothing wrinkles, folds, and creases

  • Reducing the visibility of mild to moderate scars (recessed) or creases caused by scars

  • Reducing under-eye bags and shadows

  • Adding overall plumpness and healthiness to the face by promoting collagen production

  • Improving lip volume to give you plump, luscious lips

Dermal fillers also have psychological benefits:

  • Improves your confidence and self-esteem

  • Energizes your motivation to change unhealthy lifestyle habits

  • Enhances your social life by making you feel proud about your youthful appearance

  • Increases your sense of empowerment and control over your life

What Dermal Fillers Cannot Do

The FDA does not recommend using dermal fillers for increasing the size of your breasts or your buttocks. Breast and buttock augmentations are a type of plastic surgery that may require a hospital stay, recovery time, along with downtime following the procedure.

Generally, dermal and Vycross fillers are mostly suitable for adding volume and smoothness to the lower and middle areas of the face (lips, jawline, corners of the mouth, cheeks, folds along the nose). Alternately, BOTOX®® works better to reduce wrinkles and folds affecting the upper portion of your face (forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, fine lines between the eyes). Also, since BOTOX®® essentially paralyzes muscle nerves, it doesn’t work as well as dermal fillers around the lips and cheek areas where facial movements need to look flexible and natural.

How Often Are Dermal Filler Injects Needed To Maintain Results?

In most cases, you won’t need a touch-up dermal filler treatment for about six to 12 months. However, certain factors may play a role in the re-development of wrinkles, such as your skin type, age, overall health, and exposure to environmental influences (sunlight, cold, dryness, smoke, etc.).  Also, those areas which have the most dynamic movement will need to re-filled sooner than those areas the=at tend to less movement.  So lips generally need to be touched up sooner than deep injections volumizing the upper face.
