What’s the difference between Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau?

We don’t want to alarm you, but after age 20, you produce 1% less collagen each year. Shocking, right?! While developing fine lines and wrinkles is an expected part of life, you don’t have to live with them. Whether you want to address forehead wrinkles or pesky crow’s feet, neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau can help you to look and feel your best! With so many options available, it can be hard to determine which neuromodulator is best for you. Today we’re breaking down the biggest differences between Botox, Dysport and Jeuveau to help you determine which is right for you!

What are neuromodulators and how do they work?

A neuromodulator is an injectable that works by temporarily limiting muscle movement, allowing a muscle to relax. This relaxation helps decrease (or stop) further muscle contractions, which can help prevent wrinkles from forming or deepening.

Aren’t all neuromodulators the same?

Yes and no. While Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau tend to be used interchangeably in conversation, there are minor differences in how they work. They all contain botulinum toxin Type A encased in proteins, but each are manufactured differently. Because they’re all slightly different, one brand may work better for you than another.

Here are some of the differences between Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau…

Botox

Botox was the first neuromodulator to be approved by the FDA for cosmetic use. Botox is a great start for patients trying neuromodulators for the first time. It works well for crow’s feet, forehead lines, and the lines between the eyebrows (a.k.a. the “elevens”). Additionally, Botox has a little dispersion quality that is nice for larger muscles (like the frontalis in your upper forehead).

Most people will see Botox results within 5-7 days after treatment, with full results appearing 2 weeks (14 days) post-treatment. However, if you’ve been receiving Botox for years, you may be among a percentage of people who have built up a tolerance to the treatment. (Yes, tolerance can happen with any of the neuromodulators!) If you feel like your Botox isn’t working or holding as well as it did years ago, talk to your nurse injector about other options, such as Jeuveau or Dysport.

Dysport

Dysport is another neuromodulator option and is used to treat the same areas as Botox. Similar to Botox, Dysport tends to diffuse slightly into the surrounding muscle from the injection point. This also makes it (along with Botox) a good option to address concerns such as excessive sweating in the armpits. (You heard that right—neuromodulators can be used to treat excessive sweating!)

Most people will see Dysport results in as little as 2-4 days post treatment and the final results after 2 weeks. The one caveat to Dysport use is that it can’t be used in anyone with a dairy allergy.

Jeuveau

Jeauveau is another great neuromodulator option. What sets Jeuveau apart is that it is very “locally acting,” which means it doesn’t diffuse out from the points of injection as much as Dysport and Botox. Because of this, Jeuveau is great for treating the masseters to help with soreness from clenching and grinding of the teeth. It’s also a great option for anyone who has developed a tolerance to Botox and/or Dysport.

The initial onset of Jeuveau tends to happen more quickly than with other neuromodulators. Most patients see results after a few days and the full effects after just 2 weeks!
