Non-Surgical Facial Feminization and Masculinization Techniques

Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators (such as Botox, Dysport, or Jeuveau) are basically injections that help relax muscles. They’re commonly used to address concerns such as forehead lines, eyebrow wrinkles, and crow’s feet. They are also a great treatment option for facial feminization and masculinization.

Below are a few ways neuromodulators can help you achieve a more masculine or feminine look:

Masseter muscle reduction

If you feel that your jaw (think the back corners nearest the ears/sides of the face) looks too big, too broad, or too square, a neuromodulator may be right to help address this. Often the masseter muscles get larger the more we use them (e.g., jaw clenching), but sometimes they’re just naturally larger. During a consultation, a Dermacare Expert can determine if your broader jawline is caused by this muscle. If it is, they can inject a neuromodulator to help weaken the masseter. Over time, the disuse of the muscle will help “shrink” it down. This results in a slimmer, more feminine-looking jawline.

Eyebrow shaping or placement

Neuromodulator injections can also be used to alter the shape, appearance, or placement of your eyebrows to some degree. This can help create a more symmetrical and aesthetically-pleasing look often associated with either facial feminization (generally more highly set and arched) or masculinization (generally more low set and straight).

Lip flip

This is a technique we are seeing more and more men and women come in for. It’s basically when you apply a small amount of neuromodulator to the muscle of the upper lip. This allows the muscle to “relax” in such a way that it helps give more lip show. It can also help hide a “gummy” smile.

Fillers

Unlike injectables such as Botox, fillers are injectables that work to help smooth wrinkles and lines and provide contour and balance by adding volume to the face. At DermacareHR, we use fillers made of hyaluronic acid that can be used to “build out” or contour the features to achieve either feminization or masculinization of the face.

Re-defining the jawline and/or chin

Dermal fillers are a great way to help contour the jawline and/or chin. For a more masculine look, we help patients build up their jawline and chin, making it more pronounced and broader. For patients looking for a more feminine jawline, filler can be used to help slim down the jawline and chin, creating a sleeker look.

Lip augmentation

It’s a fact that you lose volume in your lips as you age, which is why it’s common for both men and women to get lip filler! Unlike a lip flip (which targets the muscle), filler injected directly into the lips can help build them out, creating a plumper, more youthful appearance. Filler can also help address lines that may have formed in or around the lips.

Reshaping facial features (brows, cheeks, chin, etc.)

Want less hollow, softer temples? A more prominent brow bone? A less jowly appearance of the cheeks? At DermacareHR, our experts can use fillers to reshape some of your facial features so you can look and feel exactly the way you want to.

Laser hair removal

When we talk about laser hair removal, we’re traditionally referring to getting rid of hair in places you don’t want it (underarms, bikini line, legs, back, chest, etc.). When it comes to masculinization and feminization treatments, we can use laser hair removal techniques in a slightly different way.

Get rid of stubble on your face

Facial hair is not for everyone. Sometimes it grows because of a medical condition (such as PCOS), sometimes it’s in your genes, and sometimes it just seems to appear overnight. Whatever the reason, you don’t have to live with unwanted facial hair. We’ve had plenty of patients come in to remove unwanted hair because they wanted to feminize their face. But we have also had male patients get it done because their coarse facial hair had resulted in painful, consistent ingrown hairs.

Re-define the hairline

Baby hairs, widow’s peaks, and strange sideburns, oh my! Re-defining the hairline with laser hair removal is a great way to either feminize or masculinize the face! You can alter your hairline slightly, contour your sideburns… You can even contour the hair line around the back of the head/neck. Whatever you desire, laser hair removal is a great, longer-lasting treatment to help you meet your aesthetic goals.
