How to prep your skin for a Big Event in 2023

Photos and videos from your wedding (or other huge life event) will live on forever. Don’t let them haunt you! Whether you’re a stunning bride-to-be, the mother of the bride/groom, or maybe it’s your big 40th birthday, let us help you feel your very best, most confident self. Here’s how to prep your skin for that Big Event.

Important note: Everyone’s skin and skin goals are different. The below timelines reflect generalized guidelines to go by. To know what your specific needs will be to prep for your Big Event, book a consultation with a Dermacare Expert.

12 months out

The Consultation
Book a consultation. A comprehensive consultation is where we’ll develop a skincare plan based on your unique needs and goals. This plan will serve as your roadmap and will help make sure you’re getting everything you need to reach your goals.

For example, if you’re struggling with acne or acne scarring, then monthly aesthetic treatments and possibly some laser services may be recommended. Knowing you’ll need these services and starting this far in advance is the best way to make sure you see results before your Big Event! This will also allow for you and your Dermacare Expert time to see how your skin reacts to the chosen treatments and to allow for any unforeseen adjustments to your unique skin treatment plan.

6-8 months out

Botox
To keep facial lines and creases away, Botox is recommended for a trial run or for pre-conditioning a bare minimum of 6-8 months out from your big event. This is so that Botox has time to work, you have time to get used to it and can see the full results (especially if it’s your first time), and so that any adjustments to your treatment(s) can be made in your Botox plan for your pre-event treatment. Remember that everyone’s body, muscles, and facial expressions are different, so starting Botox early is important to making sure you have time to achieve your desired results.

Additionally, it’s important to know that Botox is not a solution for static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are those that are visible even when facial muscles are relaxed. However, for lines created or made more prominent by muscle contractions, Botox can be a game changer. Botox typically lasts between 3-4 months, and you should see results of Botox within 5-7 days after treatment. Full results will appear 2 weeks (14 days) post-treatment.

Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are also recommended 6-8 months before a big event. Unlike Botox, dermal fillers address volume deficiency. Fillers help smooth wrinkles and lines by adding volume back to the face for a fresher, younger look. Because they restore lost volume, fillers can help reduce facial sagging. Filler is also used to augment the lips. Different types of filler have different consistencies which are used to achieve different results. Each lasts for an extended period of time and results are immediate. (However, it can take up to two weeks for any swelling or bruising to subside.) Your Dermacare Expert will cover all of this information with you during your consultation.

5 months out

Dermaplaning
If you’ve had a Dermaplaning treatment before—you can skip this step! But if you’ve never had a Dermaplaning, then what are you even doing with your life? (Joking!) We recommend patients who’ve never had a Dermaplaning service get one 5 months before a big event to make sure they know what to expect from the service. We’ll discuss dermaplaning treatments in more detail below (see section “1 week out”), but don’t skip this step if you want to have the best skin for your Big Event. Dermaplaning will set the skin up to be the perfect foundation for makeup application and set you up to look flawless in photos!

2 months out

Botox
Now that you know how much Botox you need and where, it’s time to refresh before your Big Event! Not only are you treating current facial lines and creases, you’re also preventing future ones from forming by keeping up with your maintenance appointments.

Getting Botox 2 months out from a Big Event will ensure that:

  • The product has fully kicked in by the event date
  • Any tweaks can be made should you need them
  • Any bruising that may occur will be long gone

This appointment is also a great time to check in with your Dermacare Expert to make sure you have everything you need leading up to your event. (Is your acne flaring up? Are you running low on medical-grade face cleanser? Are you out of your vitamin C serum?)

SaltFacial
This is also a great time to get a SaltFacial. A SaltFacial will help restore, replenish and rejuvenate your skin through exfoliation, ultrasound, and LED light therapy. Just as above, this appointment is also a good time to check in on your skin! While at your appointment, you can discuss any new concerns with your Dermacare Expert. Likewise, your Dermacare Expert will be able to identify and treat (or make a plan to treat) any skin issues you might have missed. This could be blackhead removal, patches of dry skin, acne flare up, etc.

1 week out

Dermaplaning
You’re so close! For the final step in your skincare journey leading up to your Big Event, we recommend booking a Dermaplaning treatment so you have an ultra-smooth canvas for your makeup application. If your Big Event is a wedding and you’re either

  • about to spend a lot of money on a makeup artist and a photographer, or
  • you’re in the bridal party and these photos of you will live on forever

getting a Dermaplaning treatment before this event will absolutely help ensure that you look FIERCE in the photos. It will also help make sure that you (or your friends/family) get their money’s worth from the photos.

Dermaplaning is one of the least invasive skin exfoliation treatments available. The treatment gently removes the outermost layer of skin and all the vellus peach fuzz hair and creates a refreshed, rejuvenated look for any skin type. This helps create the perfect base layer for makeup application and will help you look your best in photos!

Important note: We do NOT recommend trying Dermaplaning for the first time so close to your event. Book your first session a few months prior for a smaller event (such as a date night) for a trial run. (See section “5 months out” for more!)
