Wrinkles, lines, and the loss of skin elasticity are normal signs of aging, and almost everyone sees them at some point. If you dislike the appearance of wrinkles and folds and want to get that youthful glow and spring back in your skin, you are not alone. Many people seek to reverse the telltale signs of aging, whether it’s major wrinkles or just a few laugh lines. You have probably seen the ads about BOTOX® and Dysport® and what they have done for others. Learn about these two procedures, what sets these anti-aging treatments apart, and how the professionals at Dermacare of Hampton Roads can help you determine which procedure may be best for you.
All About Dysport®, Jeaveau® and BOTOX®
Jeaveau®, Dysport® and BOTOX® are similar anti-aging treatments in the form of cosmetic injectables that use the botulinum toxin bacterium, in the form of prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs, clostridium botulinum or onabotulinumtoxinA respectively. This neurotoxin prevents the release of a certain neurotransmitter, which contracts muscles thereby forming lines of expression. When used properly, it can be applied safely to relax frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines and affecting facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Facial wrinkles and creases start as fine lines, but if left untreated, they will become more pronounced over time. BOTOX®, Jeaveau® and Dysport® allwork by blocking nerve signals to muscles, so they cannot contract, which smooths out lines and wrinkles. The average cost of Jeaveau®, BOTOX® and Dysport® treatments are roughly the same, all are exceptionally safe, and require repeat treatments every three to six months. Both Jeaveau®, Dysport® and BOTOX® injections take only a few minutes to administer. There are, however, a few differences that set the three apart. What is Dysport®?
Dysport®, or abobotulinumtoxinA, is a skincare therapy indicated for the treatment of severe frown lines in the forehead. When compared to BOTOX®, the effects of Dysport® treatment are considered to have a shorter efficacy duration — that is, you may need more frequent Dysport® treatments than BOTOX® — though we find at Dermacare that our Dysport® patients frequently have as long or longer a freeze than with BOTOX®. Dysport® does tend to show its effects more quickly than BOTOX®, and it tends to diffuse more, which can be an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on what area of the face you wish to treat.
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a famous cosmetic procedure wherein the botulinum toxin is injected to remove fine lines and wrinkles. It is a highly effective and respected wrinkle treatment and is the only neuromodulator FDA-approved for treating forehead lines, crow’s feet, and glabellar lines. BOTOX® has even been shown to help people with medical conditions like migraines. Like Dysport®, you will typically receive from 20 to 64 units of BOTOX depending on the number of treatment areas and the strength of your target muscles. After your treatment, results will start to show between in a few days, and the effects of BOTOX® last 3-4 months on average. To maintain your youthful appearance, you will need repeat follow-up treatments every few months.
Are Jeaveau®, Dysport® and BOTOX® Considered Fillers?
Dysport® and BOTOX® are NOT considered fillers. They are, different from fillers such as VOLUMA® XC, VOLBELLA®, VOLLURE®, JUVÉDERM® Ultra, JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus, VOLUX® and Versa®.
VOLUMA® XC is intended for patients requiring deep injections in the cheeks, chin and jawline. It is among the strongest and thickest fillers available. These injections provide a volume boost and lift to the face that can last up to 2 years.
VOLBELLA® is an extremely thin gel that spreads easily within the tissue. It is ideal for filling lip lines and delicate areas under the eyes. Injection results for this filler can last for 9-12 months, depending on the injection site.
VOLLURE® is somewhere between the other two, offering moderate spreadability and durability. It is often best for treating nasolabial folds & lips. It also allows for very natural movements and facial expressions. Injections of VOLLURE® can last for 12-18 months.
JUVÉDERM® was the first FDA-approved dermal filler with hyaluronic acid that works for any skin or color type. It helps to soften nasolabial folds, plump lips, and smooth facial lines, all using a naturally occurring substance in your skin.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus
JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus is a thicker gel than JUVÉDERM® Ultra and is indicated for much deeper wrinkles and folds. It is used to soften deeper wrinkles and folds than the original version of the filler.
Xeomin® is a similar treatment to BOTOX® and Dysport®. Xeomin results take longer to show than Dysport® results and our experience with it has been underwhelming, so Dermacare doesn’t offer Xeomin treatments.
BOTOX® vs. Dysport® vs. Jeaveau®: Which Lasts Longer?
While Dysport® injections begin to show measurable results in just a couple of days, as opposed to BOTOX® and Jeaveau®, all 3 options are at full effect in 2 weeks. All 3, last 3-4 months for most patients. With all 3 options, you’ll need to return to your dermatologist to get regular injections if you want to preserve the results of your treatment.
Which is More Effective?
This answer depends largely on what you want to accomplish with your cosmetic treatments. As stated above, Dysport® shows results slightly sooner, but BOTOX®, Jeaveau® and Dysport® all last about 3-4 months in our experience. Of note, our experience with Jeaveau® has shown less spread, meaning it is more precise, and stays where it’s placed; a significant advantage over the legacy toxins.
What Are the Side Effects of Jeaveau®, Dysport® & BOTOX®?
All 3 are considered a very safe skin care treatment overall. Like every cosmetic treatment, however, you may experience some minor side effects. These can include minor discomfort or bruising at the injection site and headaches. For the most part, side effects from this treatment are minor and quite manageable and resolve after just a few days as part of your normal recovery process. In some rare cases, however, more serious side effects may present. These can include nausea, sinusitis, upper respiratory infections, and other reactions to the bacterium. If you have any of these side effects or experience any other side effects that worsen or persist beyond a few days, you should immediately call your doctor.
What Are the Side Effects of BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is also considered a very safe skin care dermal filler treatment with minimal side effects. The most common include redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, minor pain around the injection area, numbness, and headaches. The American Academy of Dermatology states that these side effects should resolve within a week of the procedure. An extremely rare side effect of both BOTOX® and Dysport® is botulinum toxicity. This complication is extremely serious and can be life-threatening. It occurs when the injected bacteria spreads to other body parts beyond the injection site. Symptoms of botulinum toxicity include droopy eyelids, muscle contractions, muscle spasms, facial muscle weakness leading to reduced control of facial expressions, or difficulty breathing, speaking, eating, or swallowing. If you suspect you have botulinum toxicity, you should immediately seek emergency medical treatment.
Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX®, Dysport®, or Jeaveau®?
These treatments are generally best for healthy adults, ages of 25 to 65 who have wrinkles but do not have any skin conditions, and specifically possess moderate to severe lines on their faces. Before beginning your treatment, your doctor will review your medical history and ask you a few questions about your background to ensure that you are a good candidate. Those who are pregnant, have a history of sensitivity to botulinum toxin, have skin disorders, are allergic to milk (Dysport® only), or take certain medications are not good candidates. Medications known to thin blood & increase chances of bruising; along with muscle relaxers and anticholinergics used to treat Parkinson’s disease present a contraindication to neurotoxin treatments. If you are on any medications, tell your doctor before beginning treatment. Do not stop medications on your own. Always ask your doctor before discontinuing any medication.
Looking for a Professional in Your Area?
Whether you opt for BOTOX®, Dysport®, or Jeaveau®, it’s vital to choose a trustworthy expert. Only board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons should administer these injections. When you choose to work with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon for your injections, be sure that the doctor with whom you consult will be the one to administer the injections. Never allow someone who is a nonmedical provider or a medical provider who doesn’t have extensive training in injecting neuromodulators to inject you with neuromodulators. There is nothing wrong with asking your provider about their experience injecting Dysport® and BOTOX®. The right professional can even recommend which procedure is best for your needs. If you are in the Hampton Roads area, the highly trained providers at Dermacare are ready to consult with you and help you learn everything you need about these treatments.
